Site with Mobile Optimisation
Viewing the ComputerSpot site on a Samsung Galaxy S3 normally looks like the image on the left, you can see the mobile optimised version of the same pages below:-

Are you waiting for JellyBean (Android 4.1) for your Galaxy S3? Well its available in the UK now from most of the major mobile phone providers.
If you have checked on your Galaxy S3 for the latest Android update (Settings > About device > Software Update >Check for Updates) and you get a message similar to the one below then you should be able to jump the queue of people waiting for the Over The Air update to JellyBean.
Updates are being issued to users in the order they applied, please try again later
Then your Mobile Phone company have issued the upgrade to JellyBean and you just have to wait in the queue.
How to jump the JellyBean for Galaxy S3 Queue
If like me you don’t want to wait and are fed-up with checking on a regular basis then you can jump the queue for JellyBean using this simple and safe method.
- Go to the Samsung Website and download Kies
- Install Kies on your Mac or PC
- Connect your Galaxy S3 via USB
- Kies will then detect that there is a ROM update available for your phone
The update will then be downloaded and installed on your phone.
Thats it you have now installed JellyBean for Galaxy S3 and are up and running with the latest version of Android on your phone. From start to finish, including installing Samsung Kies, the whole process took about 10 minutes.
Benefits of JellyBean for Galaxy S3
Well the phone certainly feels snappier and web browsing etc all appear to be faster. I am not sure if this is just wishful thinking on my part or if it has made a difference. The next few days will tell.
CamCard Business Card Scanner
CamCard lets Android and iPhone users create Contacts by just taking a photo of a Business Card, it really is that simple. The software is available as a Free Download for Android, iPhone and Windows Mobile.
Why a Business Card Scanner?
If, like me, you live out of Outlook then the first thing that I do when I get handed a business card is to add the contact details into Outlook. From there it synchronises with my mobile phone and also with our Office VoIP phone system, so no matter where I am I have all the details to hand when I am talking to someone. Now I don’t even need to take a Business Card from someone, I just need to take a photo of it and let CamCard do the rest.
How to get the CamCard Business Card Scanner for your Android Phone
You can download the Free or Paid for versions of the Android App from the Android Market, just search for CamCard. The Free version of the Business Card Scanner lets you convert 10 cards in the first week of installing the App and then an additional 2 Business Cards a week after that. To unlock it to allow the creation of unlimited cards requires a small payment of about £4.00.
CamCard Business Card Scanner for iPhone
There is also a version of the CamCard Business Card Scanner for the iPhone, which has additional functionality over and above that provided in the Android version of the App. CamCard supports 12 languages and works with the iPhone 3GS and iPhone 4. You can download the CamCard Business Card Scanner from the iPhone AppStore.
You can find out more about this great Free Business Card Scanner App on their website at www.intsig.com
Android Gingerbread Ships for Desire Z on Vodafone
The latest update for the HTC Desire Z is now available, for Vodafone customers at least. This update installs Android 2.3 (Also known as Android Gingerbread).
I have downloaded and installed it on my HTC Desire Z this evening.
Check for Android Gingerbread
You can check to see if your Provider has released Android 2.3 by going to:
Menu > Settings > About Phone and then selecting Software Updates and pressing the Check Now button.
You will be notified if the update is available for your phone.
The download and update process took about 10 minutes in total, from beginning to end.
You end up with Android 2.3.3 and HTC Sense 2.1
I was hoping that the email client would be updated to support HTML mail on Exchange 2003, but Google still don’t want to fix this problem, so it remains Text only email for SBS 2003 and Exchange 2003 Customers. Exchange 2007 and above seems to to have HTML email support on the HTC.
The phone feels bit faster, but its very early days yet to know if the battery life is going to be any better.
Overall it doesn’t seem to be a major update, but I am sure that I will find out more about Android Gingerbread over the next few days as I spend more time with it.
1 week on with Android Gingerbread
Well I have had Android 2.3 on my HTC Desire Z for a week now and in general I have been very pleased with the update.
- Battery life seems to have improved slightly
- The phone is generally more responsive
- Wireless seems to hold weak signals better

What is Plan B?
At some point we have all had that heart stopping moment when we realise that ‘I can’t Find My Phone’. Plan B is the first and only ‘find my phone’ app that you download AFTER you’ve already lost your phone.
I can’t find my Phone – Now what do I do?
Imagine that you have just lost your mobile phone. You are starting to panic because you realising ‘I can’t find my phone’ and that you don’t have a backup of the information that’s on there, the Contacts, the photos etc. If you have an Android phone go to Plan B and follow the simple steps to find my phone again:
Go to the Android Market
Go to the Plan B Android Market Page from any computer. You can just go to the Android Market and search for ‘Plan B’.
Install Plan B to Find My Phone
Click the Install Button as shown on the left.
If you are not logged into your Google account you will be prompted to do so before the application can be downloaded from the Android Market to your mobile phone.
Plan B will be installed as soon as your phone has a network connection, either a Wi-Fi connection or a 3G connection.
It will take a minute or so to download and install the Plan B application to your phone. This will depend on the network connection speed that is available, bear in mind that you have lost your phone so it may be switched off or in a building with a poor signal.
If the phone is powered off when you attempt to install the software it will be queued and Plan B will be installed once the phone is powered back on and has network connectivity. As soon as it can Plan B will try to find my phone and report back its location by email.
Note: Plan B will attempt to verify that its is compatible with your phone, you can see in this case that it has identified by phone and the local carrier.
Confirm your Phone
Once you have pressed ‘Install’ Plan B will confirm the phone that you want to install (push) Plan B to. Just make sure that it is correct before you go ahead with the installation.
Click on the Install button in the lower left hand corner of the Checkout page. (assuming the phone is correct).
At this point you can relax and go and get a coffee and leave it to Plan B to Find my Phone. You now need to login to your GMail account so that you can receive the email once Plan B has installed and found your phone.
Plan B will start automatically as soon as it has installed and then send your phones location to your Gmail account. Plan B has been able to find my phone will send updates for a 10 minute period.
To locate your phone again after 10 minutes just text the word “locate” to your mobile number. At this point Plan B will spring into action again and find my phone again for me.
Plan B can Find My Phone
Plan B was able to find my phone and send me a map and its co-ordinates. Its a very clever piece of software and will try different methods to try and find my phone.
After you install it, Plan B will start locating your phone using cell towers and GPS.
On some phones, Plan B can switch GPS on automatically.
Your location will keep updating for 10 minutes, and you will get an email each time it is located, whether the phone is moving or standing still.
You can start the process again by texting “locate” to your number from any other phone.
How does Plan B Find My Phone?
- You’ll get one email message when Plan B starts, and up to 5 other messages as it refines your phone’s location or tracks it as it moves.
- Each location email will include an accuracy rating in meters.
- Plan B will attempt to launch as soon as it downloads, but in some cases you will need to send an SMS to get it started.
- Note that your location is only sent to the Gmail address that is already associated with your phone; nobody else can access your location using Plan B
Plan B was able to find my phone and give me an accurate location, it was sat on my desk in the office.
I can find my Phone – I need to protect it now
Having Lookout on your phone is the best way to protect your phone and find it fast, but use Plan B if you have already lost your Android phone, or Tablet and didn’t have Lookout installed. So get Lookout to protect your phone and important information, but if you haven’t installed Lookout before loosing your phone fall back to Plan B and then Find my Phone.

Critical Android Vulnerability
Yesterday, researchers from Germany’s University of Ulm reported that some Android applications transmit sensitive authentication data without properly securing it, making people vulnerable to having their private data (e.g. Calendar Contacts, Pictures) accessed by an attacker.
When a vulnerable device transmits its authentication data, an attacker can eavesdrop and view transmitted data if you are connected to a public WiFi network or are using a hostile internet connection. Sending data unencrypted (e.g. via HTTP rather than HTTPS) is analogous to sending your sensitive data in clear envelope so that everyone can see its contents rather than in an opaque envelope. The specific Android vulnerability is found in applications that use Google’s ClientLogin authentication service over HTTP, rather than HTTPS, such as Google Calendar and Contacts.
