OpsMgr Cumulative Update 4

This article contains a description of all changes in Cumulative Update 4 (CU4) for Microsoft System Center Operations Manager (SCOM) 2007 R2.

Cumulative Update 4 for SCOM 2007 R2 includes all previous cumulative updates for SCOM 2007 R2 and includes all cross-platform updates.

Note: Any cross-platform changes for this update and for future updates are no longer described in a separate Microsoft Knowledge Base (KB) article.

Cumulative Update 4 for SCOM 2007 R2 resolves the following issues:

  • The Performance and Resource Optimization (PRO) Tips feature does not function correctly after you install Cumulative Update 3 for SCOM 2007 R2.
  • The Alert view does not work correctly when the source of an alert contains both monitors and rules.
  • The event description is not collected by the Azure management pack. To resolve this issue, build the Windows Azure application by using Windows Azure SDK 1.3.
  • The monitoring host process may stop responding on a computer that is running on Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 2 (SP2).
  • The performance of the Diagram view is slow if a user role is in the scope of many groups.
  • In the web console properties for an alert, the hyperlinks on the Knowledge tab are not active.

Cumulative Update 4 for SCOM 2007 R2 adds the following features:

  • SQL Server 2008 R2 database upgrade support
  • Automatic recovery for Health Service in a SQL Server failure scenario

System Center Essentials Computer Discovery Never Finishes

If you have just installed Microsoft System Center Essentials to manage a Small Business Environment one of the first tasks, once the initial installation has completed, is to discover the computers to be managed.

SCE Discovery never completesIf the Computer Discovery process seems to continue forever and never completes, and the screen on the left is displayed forever then its likely that you have a problem with the SQL Server configuration on your SCE database. If this is the case then the System Center Essentials Computer Discovery will run forever and no error messages are generated.

Typically, on a healthy system, the System Center Essentials Computer Discovery will complete in just a couple of minutes and then display the list of computers that are available for you to install a System Center Essentials Agent on. At this point you simply select the computers that you want to install to and continue.

Microsoft list 1 item on the SCE Discovery screen, which relates to the SQL Service Broker. If this is a new SQL Server installation then this will NOT be the problem, as by default SQL Service Broker is enabled.

The most likely cause of System Center Essentials Computer Discovery running forever

The most likely cause of your SCE Discovery running forever is that SQL Server is configured to run under an account which does not have permissions to access the network. If your SQL Server is running under either:-

  • Local System
  • A Local User account

Then the System Center Essentials Computer Discovery will run forever.

How to fix a System Center Essentials Computer Discovery

To stop your System Center Essentials Computer Discovery running forever all you need to do is to set SQL Server to run under a domain account, this account does not need to be a Domain Admin, it can be a user level account.

Create yourself a ‘Service Account’ (a domain user account where the password is complex and set never to expire) and then use this account as the account to run SQL Server. Once you have changed the account to be a Domain account you will need to stop and restart SQL Server.

Once SQL Server has been restarted you can re-run your System Center Essentials Computer Discovery which will then complete within just a few minutes.

Cumulative Update 3 (CU3) for Microsoft System Center Operations Manager (SCOM) 2007 R2 is now available. This update also includes Cumulative Update 3 for Cross-Platform Components (KB2222955).

Whats included in Cumulative Update 3

Cumulative Update 3 (CU3) for Microsoft System Center Operations Manager (SCOM) 2007 R2 includes all preceding cumulative updates for System Center Operations Manager 2007 R2. Additionally, Cumulative Update 3 resolves the following issues:

  • Feature addition: Azure Application Monitoring
  • Feature addition: Parameter Extraction in Web Application Synthetic Transactions
  • Some ACS reports do not work as expected in Windows Server 2008
  • SCOM 2007 SP1 Reports do not run after a shared Data Warehouse is upgraded to SCOM 2007 R2
  • The SDK Services stops working due to an unhandled exception, and the operations console becomes unresponsive
  • Multi-selection in the alert view is not maintained during a view refresh
  • The operations console stops working when creating an override on the cluster resource group monitor
  • When Agentless Exception Monitoring (AEM) is set up to use SharePoint, reports from Watson are blocked
  • The Operations Manger Console stops working when a high number of instances of State Views or Alert Views are left open for extended durations
  • Upgrading MPs that include new properties may not recreate views correctly
  • The total transaction response performance counter in URL monitoring is not accurate
  • MPs with empty knowledge elements cannot be imported in Operations Manager 2007 R2
  • Monitoringhost.exe does not work reliably on Windows 2003 SP2 X64 Domain Controllers
  • Alerts using the “Specific Time Period” criteria are not included during automatic alert view refresh
  • ACS forwarders with 15 character names in workgroups are unable to communicate with the ACS collector
  • Language packs authored for a previous version of an MP cannot be imported once an updated MP is released
  • Language Pack import fails if the MP contains strings which are not contained in the English Management Pack
  • Generic performance reports consume a large amount of temporary database space and can fail for Windows Server 2003 Computer Groups
  • When using a remote console the notification wizard does not work in certain situations
  • The SDK service may stop working due to an arithmetic overflow error in very rare circumstances
  • The notification scheduler does not compensate correctly for different time zones
