If you have checked on your Galaxy S3 for the latest Android update (Settings > About device > Software Update >Check for Updates) and you get a message similar to the one below then you should be able to jump the queue of people waiting for the Over The Air update to JellyBean.

Then your Mobile Phone company have issued the upgrade to JellyBean and you just have to wait in the queue.

How to jump the JellyBean for Galaxy S3 Queue

If like me you don’t want to wait and are fed-up with checking on a regular basis then you can jump the queue for JellyBean using this simple and safe method.

  1. Go to the Samsung Website and download Kies
  2. Install Kies on your Mac or PC
  3. Connect your Galaxy S3 via USB
  4. Kies will then detect that there is a ROM update available for your phone

The update will then be downloaded and installed on your phone.

Kies Update for Jellybean         Download JellyBean Update          JellyBean for Galaxy S3 Updated

Thats it you have now installed JellyBean for Galaxy S3 and are up and running with the latest version of Android on your phone. From start to finish, including installing Samsung Kies, the whole process took about 10 minutes.

Benefits of JellyBean for Galaxy S3

Well the phone certainly feels snappier and web browsing etc all appear to be faster. I am not sure if this is just wishful thinking on my part or if it has made a difference. The next few days will tell.

When did you last Backup Your Computer?

Most of us have loads of irreplaceable information on our computers, photo’s, business information, that book we have been trying to write. In general this information only lives in one place, our computer, but when did you last backup your computer.

The other week my laptop was knocked onto the floor, whilst I was on a clients site, unfortunately the screen and keyboard broke and the laptop was a write off. Saturday morning saw me in the local PC Super Store buying a replacement, as I needed to have a working laptop for Monday mornings meetings.

Luckily my laptop was set up with our Cloud Backup service, Best Online Backup UK, so within a couple of minutes I had access to all of my documents, templates, photos etc. from my new PC. I have never been so glad of having installed a simple piece of software that works silently in the background.

Backup Your Computer with Best Online Backup UKWhen did you last Backup Your Computer?

For me the answer to ‘When did you last backup your computer?’  is simple, every minute of every day that my PC is connected to the Internet. As soon as I save a new file, document etc it starts to backup to the Cloud Backup Service. It even supports versions and incremental backups, so if I update a large document only the changes in the document get uploaded.

What is Plan B?

At some point we have all had that heart stopping moment when we realise that ‘I can’t Find My Phone’. Plan B is the first and only ‘find my phone’ app that you download AFTER you’ve already lost your phone.

I can’t find my Phone – Now what do I do?

Imagine that you have just lost your mobile phone. You are starting to panic because you realising ‘I can’t find my phone’ and that you don’t have a backup of the information that’s on there, the Contacts, the photos etc. If you have an Android phone go to Plan B and follow the simple steps to find my phone again:

Go to the Android Market

Go to the Plan B Android Market Page from any computer. You can just go to the Android Market and search for ‘Plan B’.

Install Plan B to Find My Phone

Find my Phone with Plan B Click the Install Button as shown on the left.

If you are not logged into your Google account you will be prompted to do so before the application can be downloaded from the Android Market to your mobile phone.

Plan B will be installed as soon as your phone has a network connection, either a Wi-Fi connection or a 3G connection.

It will take a minute or so to download and install the Plan B application to your phone. This will depend on the network connection speed that is available, bear in mind that you have lost your phone so it may be switched off or in a building with a poor signal.

If the phone is powered off when you attempt to install the software it will be queued and Plan B will be installed once the phone is powered back on and has network connectivity. As soon as it can Plan B will try to find my phone and report back its location by email.

Note: Plan B will attempt to verify that its is compatible with your phone, you can see in this case that it has identified by phone and the local carrier.

Confirm your Phone

Plan B Install to Phone

Once you have pressed ‘Install’ Plan B will confirm the phone that you want to install (push) Plan B to. Just make sure that it is correct before you go ahead with the installation.

Click on the Install button in the lower left hand corner of the Checkout page. (assuming the phone is correct).

At this point you can relax and go and get a coffee and leave it to Plan B to Find my Phone. You now need to login to your GMail account so that you can receive the email once Plan B has installed and found your phone.

Plan B will start automatically as soon as it has installed and then send your phones location to your Gmail account. Plan B has been able to find my phone will send updates for a 10 minute period.

To locate your phone again after 10 minutes just text the word “locate” to your mobile number. At this point Plan B will spring into action again and find my phone again for me.

Plan B can Find My Phone
Plan B Phone Found

Plan B  was able to find my phone and send me a map and its co-ordinates. Its a very clever piece of software and will try different methods to try and find my phone.

After you install it, Plan B will start locating your phone using cell towers and GPS.

On some phones, Plan B can switch GPS on automatically.

Your location will keep updating for 10 minutes, and you will get an email each time it is located, whether the phone is moving or standing still.

You can start the process again by texting “locate” to your number from any other phone.

How does Plan B Find My Phone?

  • You’ll get one email message when Plan B starts, and up to 5 other messages as it refines your phone’s location or tracks it as it moves.
  • Each location email will include an accuracy rating in meters.
  • Plan B will attempt to launch as soon as it downloads, but in some cases you will need to send an SMS to get it started.
  • Note that your location is only sent to the Gmail address that is already associated with your phone; nobody else can access your location using Plan B

Plan B was able to find my phone and give me an accurate location, it was sat on my desk in the office.

I can find my Phone – I need to protect it now

Having Lookout on your phone is the best way to protect your phone and find it fast, but use Plan B if you have already lost your Android phone, or Tablet and didn’t have Lookout installed. So get Lookout to protect your phone and important information, but if you haven’t installed Lookout before loosing your phone fall back to Plan B and then Find my Phone.

Microsoft to buy Skype

Microsoft have entered into a definitive agreement, today, to buy Skype for 8.5 Billion Dollars.

You can read the details in the full Microsoft Press Release at http://www.microsoft.com/Presspass/press/2011/may11/05-10CorpNewsPR.mspx

Skype will support Microsoft devices like Xbox and Kinect, Windows Phone and a wide array of Windows devices, and Microsoft will connect Skype users with Lync, Outlook, Xbox Live and other communities. Microsoft will continue to invest in and support Skype clients on non-Microsoft platforms.

What impact will this have on Skype?

Skype have more than 170 million connected users and last your racked up over over 207 billion minutes of voice and video conversations. In the last 18months they increased the ‘calling minutes’ buy around 150 percent. Given the huge amount Microsoft are paying for Skype I can’t see them turning their backs on the successful formula, so I wouldn’t expect to see major changes at the high volume consumer level.

Where you can expect to see changes to Skype is its acceptance and use within large businesses and its going to have a huge impact on the VoIP market. Microsoft already have a presence in the consumer, peer-to-peer, voice market with Messenger, they also have a business product with Lync. This is where I expect to see the major changes with the technology behind Skype being integrated into Lync. So in the short to medium term I would expect Skype to become a business carrier product, and billable platform, for businesses even if they don’t realise that they are using Skype.

Do you get an error when you try to open attachments in Outlook?

I had a situation last week where a customer couldn’t open .tiff attachments direct from Outlook, however if they saved the attachment first they could open it. The customer was using SBS 2003 and the attachments were inbound faxes, so we needed to fix it for them. Double clicking on the, saved, .tif file allowed them to open attachments so I knew that the File Associations were set correctly, as the .tif file opened correctly in Windows Photo Gallery.

File Associations
File Associations

You can check the File Associations in Control Panel > Default Programs > Set Associations

Why can’t I open attachments in Outlook?

When you try to open attachments in Outlook, in the background, Outlook makes a temporary copy of the file in a Secure Temp Folder, a sub-folder of the Temporary Internet Files Folder. In most cases the problem is that Outlook can’t create the temporary file. Occasionally this will be because you don’t have permissions to the temporary folder, but more often than not its because there are too many files in the folder. In this case all we need to be to enable you to open attachments from Outlook again is to delete the old files from the sub-folder.

Fix to allow you to Open Attachments in Outlook

The sub-folder name Outlook creates  in the Temporary Internet Files folder is random.

In Outlook 2007 and Outlook 2010, this folder is called Content.Outlook and then has a sub-folder which is named with with random numbers and letters. By default, you can’t simply browse to the folder to clean it out, finding the Temporary Outlook Folder can still be accomplished in  couple of simple steps though.

Find the Outlook Temporary folder

The folder location, for the Outlook Temporary Files, is stored in the registry in the following key;

Outlook 97 HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\8.0\Outlook\Security
Outlook 98 HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\8.5\Outlook\Security
Outlook 2000 HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\9.0\Outlook\Security
Outlook 2002/XP HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\10.0\Outlook\Security
Outlook 2003 HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\11.0\Outlook\Security
Outlook 2007 HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\12.0\Outlook\Security
Outlook 2010 HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\14.0\Outlook\Security

Outlook Secure Temp Registry Key

Get to the folder

Outlook SecureTemp Key

  1. Double click on the OutlookSecureTempFolder registry key to open it
  2. Select the Value Data and Copy the path from the key.
  3. Open Windows Explorer
  4. Paste the address in the Address Bar and press Enter
  5. This will now open the SecureTemp Directory and display the contents
  6. You can now select the files and delete them

The SecureTemp directory should normally be cleared when you exit Outlook, so if you don’t regularly shut Outlook Down then you may come across this problem.

Check that you can now open attachments from Outlook

How can you use the latest FTTC fast broadband?

The latest fast broadband provides speeds of upto 40Mb download and 10Mb upload. These speeds could drastically change the way that businesses work and how home users interact with the internet.

A fast broadband connection, using FTTC, is cost effective at little more than most people pay for standard ADSL.

What services can I now use with FTTC  Fast Broadband?

Once you have the new super fast broadband in place a host of new applications become real options for businesses. The applications below are just a few examples of what you can do with a fast broadband connection. The new FTTC Fast Broadband connections could also change the way that we work, being able to work from anywhere being a real option.

Fast Broadband and Online Backup

The massive increase in upload speeds means that services like Online Backup become a real option for Small Business. Previously the upload speed of a typical ADSL line was around 0.5Mb, so the increases to either 2Mb or 10Mb with an FTTC services, like BT Infinity, mean that for a lot of businesses online backup services will be upto 20 times quicker. Even at 4 times quicker, with the 2Mb upload throughput, Online backup is now a serious option for a lot of businesss.

Fast Broadband and Cloud Services

Cloud Services for applications like document management now become a real option for Small Businesses. The increase in upload speed makes scanning and storing documents in the cloud, with cloud services like Microsoft Office 365 (Formerly BPOS). The massive increase in download speeds also means that documents can be stored in the cloud and accessed only when required, rather than keeping a copy in the office.

Fast Broadband and Hosted VoIP

Small and medium size businesses have been able to run hosted VoIP over a dedicated ADSL line, supporting around 5 concurrent calls on a typical ADSL line.  The advent of the additional bandwidth means that you can run significantly more concurrent VoIP users over a FTTC fast internet link. This expansion of users helps to keep the costs down as larger organisations no longer need multiple lines to support a larger VoIP community.

Using SamKnows for FTTC Availability Checking

To check if you are in a fast internet area take a look at our blog post, fast internet availability,  and you can see when your area is due to be upgraded. You can also use the SamKnows service to see what connection speed you can expect from your new Fast Broadband connection.

FTTC Availability Checker

The SamKnows website provides ADSL and Broadband availability checking  http://www.samknows.com/broadband/broadband_checker

FTTC Availability SpeedAvailability Checker

Once you enter, either, your phone number or your post code into the Broadband checker at SamKnows then you will be presented with a summary screen, like the one on the left.

The summary shows which options are actually available in your area. This summary will show all of the available connectivity types including FTTC, ADSL and SDSL from BT, along with the options from the independent ISP’s.

If you then click on the connectivity type, e.g. BT FTTC on the left hand side you will be shown the details of the speeds you can expect at your home or office. You will see both the minimum and maximum speeds that you can expect to receive from your fast broadband connection.

In this case you can see that we anticipate a minimum download speed of 28.4 Mbps and a minimum upload speed of 6.2Mbps. The upload speed is approximately 10 times what we currently achieve with an ADSL line.

If you are interested in getting the fastest internet connection for your home or business then talk to us at SystemAssure and we will will help you upgrade to FTTC Fast Broadband.
